The expressway has reduced the travel time between the cities of Mumbai and Pune to approximately two hours.[citation needed] For most practical purposes, it has replaced the older Mumbai-Pune stretch of the Mumbai-Chennai National Highway (NH 4), which had become extremely congested and accident-prone over time. The expressway starts at Kalamboli (near Panvel), and ends at Dehu Road (near Pune). It cleaves through the scenic Sahyadri mountain ranges through passes and tunnels. It has six interchanges: Shedung, Chowk, Khalapur, Lonavala, Kusgaon and Talegaon.

The expressway has two carriageways with three concrete lanes, each separated by a central divider and a tarmac or concrete shoulder on either side. Vehicles with fewer than four wheels and agricultural tractors are not permitted, although tractor-trailers (semi-trailer rigs) are permitted. The expressway handles about 43,000 PCUs daily,[4] and is designed to handle up to 1,000,000 PCUs. This road has improved transport between these 2 metro cities and helped the economy.

A 13-year-old Royal Bengal tiger inhabiting the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in suburban Borivali died of age-related ailments. The feline, named Palash, died Tuesday, veterinarian Dr Shailesh Pethe said. Palash had been on saline for four days, but chances of its survival were grim due to renal failure, the doctor said. Tiger, being a carnivorous animal, consumes high amount of protein. Renal failure is common among such animals in old age. The tigers in protected areas generally live up to 16 years.

13-year-old Royal Bengal Tiger dies in Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

Mumbai World Animal Day turned out to be a day of mourning instead of being a day designated to celebrate the world's animals. A news as unfortunate as this couldn't have come on a worse day.

A much-loved resident of the 'Sanjay Gandhi National Park' in suburban Borivali, a 13-year-oldTiger by the name of Palash, died due to age-related ailments.

Palash, the tiger, was the second oldest Royal Bengal Tiger of Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

Palash had been on saline for four days, but chances of his survival were grim due to renal failure, veterinarian Dr Shailesh Pethe said. The tigers in protected areas generally live up to 16 years, Dr Pethe added.

Palash's serum creatinine levels had shot up and it died due to excessive weakness. A postmortem was conducted on Tuesday and the exact cause of death would be inferred from the results that are expected in a couple of days, an official of the national park said.

Powai Lake (named after Framaji Kavasji Powai Estate) is an artificial lake, situated in Mumbai, in the Powai valley, where a Powai village with a cluster of huts existed. The city suburb called Powai shares its name with the lake. Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, one of the premier institutions of science and technology in India, is located to the east of the lake. Another famous institution, the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), is also located close to the lake. Housing complexes and plush hotels are developed all around the lake periphery. Population around the lake has thus substantially increased over the years.

When it was built, the lake had an area of about 2.1 square kilometres (520 acres) and the depth varied from about 3 metres (9.8 ft) (at the periphery) to 12 metres (39 ft) at its deepest.[2]

The Powai Lake has gone through many stages of water quality degradation. The lake water which used to supply drinking water for Mumbai has been declared unfit to drink. The lake still remains a tourist attraction

NIC, With its well thought of displays and captivating models is a gateway to the real treasures of SGNP which are obviously its’ forests and the myriad life forms that live within. Exhibits here depict different aspects related to wildlife and biodiversity with a stress on the need for their conservation. The quite little garden outside is a haven for butterflies and also is developed as a display for some of our uncommon medicinal plants.

The NIC is like your road map to SGNP’s tremendous biodiversity. On the pathway to the centre, sits a model representation of the park, beautifully depicting the geographical layout and forming an actual gateway into the urban wilderness of SGNP. The centre is a mix of illustrations, models and photographs, interactive media all coming together to inspire, educate and inform, not just aspects of the biodiversity but even that which threatens it.

Playing the vital role of the educational arm of the
SGNP management, the NIC organises activities like nature trails, bird-watching excursions, butterfly watch, treks and overnight camps led by experts.

NIC specialises in organising guided nature excursions into the SGNP wilderness; though prior intimation or booking helps in better arrangement of your trip.
